Good Morning Everyone:
I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend. It was glorious. We have really had an amazing summer.
Along those lines, please join me in saying goodbye and thank you to our wonderful summer students – Jeffreen, Noah, Emily and PJ - and who are finishing up their summers this week. You all did a fantastic job we look forward to seeing you again soon when you start your articles. Talented young lawyers is what keeps Goodmans great.
I would also like to welcome Hari back and congratulate him and Angelika on one the most exciting and glamorous weddings of the year – you would think they were Kardashians or something….all the best!!
This week’s theme could be loosely based on health and fitness, but not really – I am grasping here.
The Body- A Guide for Occupants – By: Bill Bryson – As you know, I am a real science junkie (who doesn’t really understand science, which is proven every time I try to help my children with their science homework and they end up having to call my much smarter brother in law for real help). So when books are written that explain complex concepts in a way that is digestible to the lay person, I am all over it. Bill Bryson is famous for finding really interesting ways to tell stories, his most famous book, A Short History of Nearly Everything, speaks for itself. In The Body, Bryson uses his unique gift as a writer and story teller to explain in great detail how each part of our body works and how it all interrelates. He also provides some useful information for daily life, including his discussion of the brain and how there are lifestyle choices we can and should make to mitigate the risks of dementia. As an active member of the Baycrest board and someone who is very interested in learning about healthy aging, I find this discussion to be extremely informative. At the same time, he explains how nobody really just dies of “old age” but rather as a result of various system breakdowns – there are so many opportunities for this to happen. There is a lot to learn about how we operate, some stuff you want to know and some you wish you never did. Here is a good review from The Guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/books/2019/sep/26/the-body-guide-for-occupants-bill-bryson-review
TED Talks Daily - Why fun is the secret to a healthier life | Catherine Price – As hard as we all work, I have always been a believer that we all need an outlet that allows us to enjoy life. For me it is playing sports, playing with my friends and family and reading interesting books. Now there is science backing this basic proposition. Ask ten people what their definition of fun is today and you will get a very wide range of responses. At the end of the day, I view fun as something you do for you because you really want to do it and while you are doing it, time stands still. Here’s an excerpt from the PODCAST itself, “Have you had your daily dose of fun? It's not just enjoyable, it's also essential for your health and happiness, says science journalist Catherine Price. She proposes a new definition of fun -- what she calls "true fun" -- and shares easy, evidence-backed ways to weave playfulness, flow and connection into your everyday life”: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/ted-talks-daily/id160904630?i=1000570613230
Thank you for your ongoing engagement and participation.
And remember to stay safe, stay healthy and to docket daily.
