Hello BL5,
In an effort to keep the book and podcast recommendations going, I will kick it off for 2021.
SHUGGIE BAIN by Douglas Stuart
This book won the 2020 Booker Prize. It is heart wrenching and very difficult to read but it also a beautiful story about struggle, identity, poverty, violence and addiction. I realize this may not be the “pick me up” people are looking for during these times, but it is beautifully written and one of those books that draws you in, in such a way that you won’t want to put it down. I was emotionally invested with both Shuggie and Agness all the way through. Below is a review from the New York Times Book Review that describes the story quite well (and was written before it won the Booker).
Laurent Duvernay-Tardif: From Super Bowl Champ to the COVID Frontline
On the other side of the spectrum is this ESPN podcast that Steve Halperin sent to me over the holidays. It is a story of joy. More specifically, it is a remarkable story about a Super Bowl champ from last year (GO CHIEFS), who is also a doctor and who is also a Canadian. I won’t spoil it, other than to say that this remarkable man, decided that helping those in need during the Covid-19 Crisis was the most important thing he could do with his time this year. Thank you, Steve for sharing this story. It is amazing. I hope this inspires others to share their book and podcast recommendations. I know everyone is super busy already but an occasional distraction that gives perspective is always worthwhile during these stressful times.
See you all on Friday.
Jon
